How do I stop my blanket-stitches rolling forward?
Having done millions of blanket stitches I have learned some tips over the years on achieving the best results. One of the biggest problems with the stitch is that if they are not anchored properly, they will roll forward.
There are several things you can do to prevent this
- On round (ie, "smiling") curves, every 4 or 5 stitches do a tiny back-stitch. On round (ie, "frowning") curves, there is no need to do this...these stitches won't roll forward.
- On corners, take your needle to the back of the work and do a tiny stabilizing stitch just through the backing fabric, making sure it doesn't show through the front of the applique and then bring your needle back out through the last stitch, and continue on as normal.
- The best way to solve the problem is the "Up and Down Blanket Stitch". Do a regular blanket-stitch taking the needle from the top to the edge of the applique. Now do another stitch over the top of the one you have just done but in reverse, ie, take the needle from the bottom to the top. Pass the thread over the needle, and then gently pull the thread down, anchoring the stitch. This one isn't going anywhere. These are great to do on corners and on long pointy spots, such as the ends of leaves.
